The Last Airbender change the races for the characters from their original races because M. Night Shyamalan was casting for who will play the parts and base their races on the main characters. Katara and Sokka in the show are Inuit (Eskimo) the actors who play them white because M. Night Shyamalan think they fit the roles.

Re: Social communications thread ver. 2
I'm still kind of upset over avatar, I mean, it didn't even have 'Avatar' in the title for the movie (of course, I understand to a degree, considering how it would probably get confused with the giant blue aliens).
I'm a total Avatard too, Rainbow ;w;
The casting is okay, but still, I definitely would have cast it differently >3>
Well, it still looks like too much srs bsns, I mean, Aang is goofball in the cartoon >3>

Well they have to make it look like serious business, to attract viewers who aren't as dedicated to the show as you and I. I mean, if you look at the cartoon ads, they are almost always serious anyway. (I'd find examples, but I'm lazy).
The thing that really got me about Avatar was that it was serious with comedy mixed in, and romance, and... well everything. It was a great show, because it utilized so many aspects of media. Aang wasn't dealing with something tame-- his whole tribe was MURDERED. Kataraa is the last of the waterbenders in her tribe, because all the other ones were rounded up and executed, or killed in war. Toph's parents send people after the group to kill them. Heck, Zuko's whole existence in the first two books is dedicated to murdering the avatar to gain his fathers approval after the man burned half his face off. In the end, Azula goes insane because she cannot handle the guilt of going against her missing mother, and cannot stand the idea of everyone leaving her for what she has been praised for doing her entire life. The psychological strain depicted as being put upon these kids is astounding, and the way the story flows to allow them to develop and contend with this strain is even moreso. [/rant]
This is srs besinaz if u ask me.
and i like the new Nightmare on Elm Street. :/ (Michael Bay)

Well, I'm still excited about the last airbender (but what's the sequel going to be called?) it does look interesting (and shyma...thing was only credited for his bad movies by adding stupid twists in his movies. Other than the twists, many people think he's a good director. And it's an adaption, meaning it can't have any twists in it. (hopefully) meaning this movie may turn out to be better than we thought.)
irrational logic ftw!
All I'm saying is don't count your chickens before they hatch. It may turn out to be a hit!
And, rain, as I do agree that the show is serious, if a newcomer to avatar (not the blue aliens) read your rant...they would think it's rated at least 14A of something, and maybe even be freaked out. Avatar has a decent enough of silliness, making it not as serious as it truly is. Not to say it isn't serious at times, but it seems to strike a perfect balance by dealing with complex themes, but still having an element of fun. (though I'm worried that the movie may upset the balance...ah, we'll see ^^)

Re: Social communications thread ver. 2
well the great thing about Aang was that he was saved the brutality of the war up until he was let out, meaning he still has the carefree aspects of a kid, but was dealing with these things-- that was why he was able to keep an upbeat attitude. If you notice, he gets extremely upset whenever someone points out the tragedy of the war-- ex. When the earth general guy convinces him to attempt to achieve the avatar state to end the war.
IMO, I have always been surprised by the depth of the show, and do in fact think that if the creators had wanted to, a few simple twist could have easily brought the show up in the rating system. As it is, I'm surprised it was directed towards such a young audience. 13-18 year olds I could see, but some of the advertising made it seem like it was for 8 year olds or something... >>

Well, I think it kind of is directed at younger kids to a degree, maybe even at first that was the intent, but I don't know... because I'm pretty sure it IS watched by teenagers more anyway xD I think I know, like, ONE actual kid who watched it avidly, and he was in... 4th grade? 5th grade? Something liked that...
Oh well, I'll probably go see it regardless of what my opinions are right now because I absolutely love the series and want to see how this turns out (if I can get anyone to see it with me -sob-) I just hope it doesn't let me down ;; -crosses fingers-

IDK, every time I see the trailer, I can't help but think of Dragonball Evolution (shudder)...

Re: Social communications thread ver. 2
yea, but with that, they totally and completely messed up the story. really, the only thing even having to do with the original were the names and the dragonballs. it had absolutely nothing to do with the anime.

DON't even mention dragonball evolution...
It's the unspeakable movie!
O, by the way...did anyone notice zukos scar? I totally didn't! (I was like...where is it? Is it even there? (though I didn't see the horrible burns on the teachers skin in pay it forward, so...what do I know?) )

Re: Social communications thread ver. 2
OH. MY. GOD.
Okay, it's been awhile since I've looked anything up on the movie (trying to avoid it, you know) and I guess I just haven't seen anything in such a long time, so I forgot how much I hated the casting. Mrrrrrrrr...
@Mr. Tweetums:
I can see it, but I see what you mean, it's kind of light...? -shrugs- I'm pretty unobservant too xD
-didn't notice that teacher's scar in Pay it Forward for a long time either-

Re: Social communications thread ver. 2
*cough*Brock*cough*
I think it's for the same reason most anime and manga don't have dark-skinned characters-- there aren't typically a large amount of dark skinned people in Japan. A girl did a report on it in my Anime/Manga class, and the result was pretty much that since most anime and manga is based in japan or europe, dark-skinned people are considered exotic, and are also saved to be used as the stereotypical BA black character.
EDIT: What the heck?! Didn't KawaiiHinata post before this? Her post just dissapeared....
OH, and I like the new White legendary. It's beautiful!
