Alright, how about this?

You sit down and play a game of chess with another person. The person claims they have never been beaten at chess before, yet when you play them, you win easily. What allowed you to surpass the person with a perfect record?

Was this the first time your opponent has actually played chess?

Woo! Got it =]

Okay, this is kind of a classic riddle, I think. Any rate, I didn't come up with it. Here it goes:

"This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down."

What is it? (and bonus points if you can tell me where I got this riddle)

Yep! Good job, nova! Any guesses as to where the riddle is from?

Where do people get riddles from? Sphinxes?

Ummm, The Hobbit, maybe? There were a lot of riddles in there. Movie (x2) next year too.

You are two for two (yes, it's from the Hobbit)! Nice going, Nova =]

Re: Stump 'Em!

Aww, would have been better if I had no idea where it was from. Now I feel like I subconsciously remembered the answer rather than figuring it out :p

Ah, and in the vein (or is it vain?) of riddles:

What first walks on four legs, then on two, and then on three?

Hint: it's not the conventional solution.

Also not my invention, so bonus for where it came from.

but nova! There are already so many different variations on that riddle!

The obvious one is human of course...but the only other one I can think of is the batman riddler version.

Any other hints?

It's the riddler one Very Happy
A baby:

"True, it crawls on all fours, but cut off its legs and it can only wiggle on two limbs. Give it a crutch, it can hobble around on three. You see?"

Doctor: how can you say something like that?!?!?

"Easy, Doctor. It's not my baby."

Very Happy I love the Riddler. And many batman villains. They're so awesome.

Whoa, really? It was the riddler one? O.o

Go figure! I thought it would be too obscure for me to mention! and people would think I was psychotic if I actually said it! Razz

well, I guess it's my turn now! It's from my elementary school days!
There are 3 hooks, 4 chairs, 4 cards, a table, and a dead body in a room. How did the person die, and what was the situation?

Obviously, there were four pirates playing Ace of Spades ... with four cards. Yeah. The pirates use hooks, cuz that's what pirates do. The dead guy drew the ace of spades and the other three hooked out his throat and guts and the other one went up his eye.

That's the best I could come up with.

huh! That answer does actually work!

But unfortunately it's not the right answer! Razz
The situation is set in a modern time, so unfortunately, no traditional pirates! (but coincidentally, the situation is at the ocean!)

in the ocean? would the hooks be fishing hooks then?
uh the room is underwater cuz the boat sank and he and his three friends played poker to see who got the life jacket or life raft? and he didnt.

Poker tends to involve more than four cards, unless one of the survivors took the rest of the deck(s) with them. Also, there are only three hooks ... I don't go fishing, but you're meant to take more than that, I think.

actually, that situation isn't too far off, razor!

although the 4 cards/deck thing isn't that important...(the 4 cards left were the 4 people playing to see who would get the lowest card)

I'd give it to you, but there is a reason for the 3 hooks! (and they're not fishing hooks!) You're extremely close though!
