Thoughts about the Opening

Post by Keyhala on Thu Sep 23, 2010 3:11 am

Okay, so I was listening through the opening a bit yesterday and tried to pratice sing it a few times, and then I realized that the song is making quite a "trip" from low tones in the beginning to high tones in the end, which I find a little troublesome since if I start with a "regular" tone on the first part of the verse, my voice cracks as the bridge&chorus end up to high, but if I adjust it to the bridge&Chorus, the first part of the verse becomes reallyreally low...

Then I got thinking, it might be easier for a guy to sing the first part (they usually have an easier time with lower tones) while a girl might have an easier time with the chorus... so I though, wouldn't it be possible to make a "duet" thing out of it? (Guy singing first part of the verse, girl singing bridge and both singing chorus (for example))

Now, I don't have a guy in my friend group who likes to sing, but I still got that though XD Also, I found some OP/EDs of anime who use both guys and girls, and I usually find it to sound quite nice.

Any thoughts on that?

((Also, do we have any ideas on an Ending?))

The song is indeed hard to sing, no doubt. But I don't think we want duets, you're not the first one to suggest thisXD;

Here are some good auditions where you may want to reference from:
4shared.com/audio/A90u1sOO/CocosAuditionxD.html
4shared.com/audio/rjcqNW-e/betterq.html

They are both by the same person, but I loved her first audition, which had more power, but her newest one is more refined and better quality as compared to the first; so I decided to put both links in.

We have some ending ideas as well. The song is by alexie on the forums.

Hah, she actually has quite the same type of voice as me (ish, not exactly, though XD) well, I'll try at it this afternoon either way and send it in, so we'll see XD

And i absolutely ADORE the ending theme... would it be okay if I wrote some ideas for lyrics and made a recording with that one as well?

Thank you ^_^

edit:: Okay, I wrote some lyrics for the ending (mainly for myself XD), and I played around with having the lyrics in Japanese, since I personally love Japanese songs XD So yah, here goes (english translation-ish is below)

Romaji:

"sono shounen wa bouken ni ueteiru"-te hitotachi to iu
itte koto o shinjite
ue o deru to sugi ni ame ha furihajimeru
wake mo naku kanashikunatta

sono shunkan ni
kumo ga harete
taiyou ga sashihajimeteita

shinsetsu ni mo tetsu dattekureta kokoro
no oku kara tama no sakebi ga toikakeru

yasashii koe de itte
"doko mo akunai kara nakanai
hajime no ippo wa shika no seki

ashita mo harete darou, ne?"

English:

"that boy sure loves adventures", those people used to say
I could only agree
But as soon as I left home, it started to rain
And I felt sad for some reason

Right at that moment
The clouds dissipated
and the sun came out to shine

A gentle hand reaches out to me
and called out to me deep within my heart

that kind voice said to me
"there's nothing wrong, so don't cry
The first step is always the hardest

it will be fine tomorrow too, right?"

...I'm sorry that my Japanese isn't better than this D8 But anyway, I wrote these in half an hour or so, so I'm gonna try and sing them to the ED in an hour or so, so we'll have to see how it turns out 83

I know that this is an anime and all, but since we're creating an anime in English, I think it more appropriate that the lyrics are in English, as we decided for the opening.

Generally I think those are some really good lyrics for the ending and it's great you're putting so much effort on the stuff we're not paying much attention to right now. However I think maybe the lyrics are maybe suited more for a later arc like FR/LG due to the melancholy sad nature of the words. Those kinds of things are usually said in retrospect, in reflection. But we haven't done an episode yet. XD.

About the opening too, duet openings don't sound too bad but I think a singer by themselves is enough for now. (Okay, I'm saying it's harder to review duet openings because both singers usually don't compliment each other very well...>_>)

Anyways cool work. But no worries, we have ideas for the opening.

As far as I know, I thought the issue of whether the OP was going to be instrumental or not was still up in the air. Maybe we should clear this up ASAP, like making a poll?

I think whether people want the opening to be instrumental or not will also depend on what singers etc. we can get for it. I think a poll on that isn;t a great idea now, but I didn;t realise that that idea was still going so I think it should be made clear that it is. (i.e. keep trying to get a singer and lyrics and fix that all up, while also making it clear that an instrumental is an option)

I was about to post something on Keyhala's audition page, because I wasn't sure when my Ending theme was being used...now I get it. Heh.

The opening is indeed tricky to sing....

I did listen. And I decided to comment later because I was (and still am, if not WORSE OFF) in a bad mood. I couldn't bring myself to correctly critique.

Well, I don't think finding a singer would be a problem considering I basically have an array of singers at my disposal (from me attending a performing arts school). I definitely don't wanna discourage any possibile auditionees though. Still, I feel the instrumental VS non-instrumental issue should be brought to attention.

I think I have to agree with the song being too... ranged. That, and the fact that it's a little hard to get some of the words in.

I decided to try again with the song, with out cheating(lulz), and... Well...

Why don't you listen yourself:

I'm absolutely STRAINING my voice. It's ridiculous. I can't believe you guys wanted a boy to do this. XD I don't know of any boy that can go THAT high. (Except Chris Colfer... But getting him to do this for us would be a miracle...)

Ooh, @__@ Squeaky sharp. Squeaky flat. And horribly off tempo there Akie. It did sound like you straining it there. Maybe if you brought it an octave lower...? You did manage to hit a majority of the notes though, so well done!

But in regard to non/instrumental opening, I thought usually what animes did was have a J-pop song in the background while animations go on over the top. Instrumentals could work for the opening, but 1st impressions are important so I would think a sung opening is the safer way to go.

Bringing an octave lower would help, but it's very hard to do that when you have the little piano sound that's supposed to be the notes you're singing going off at the same time. XD The brain wants to follow, ya know?

I'm probably off tempo because I tried to tune out those noises. XD lulz.

Maybe bringing the whole singing part down an octave will do the trick?

It does want to follow, one of the many reasons why I sing when I'm playing the piano. But the whole octave down thing is something for the music team to answer - they did say they would make it easier for auditionees to sing to. But there are easier ways to sing than trying to do strictly by the piano; for one thing it's impossible for altos. You could try singing louder rather than more higher pitched for one, as usually (as long as its in key), it achieves a similiar effect.

Re: Thoughts about the Opening

Post by Nol on Sat Oct 02, 2010 4:57 pm

The range thing was mentioned ever since like the month the song was made, but for some reason there was this huge break and we didn't actually implement any changes to the song. >_>

Basic fixes include transposing the song entirely (recently Alexie said G Major's a good key, and I think a long time ago Marley mentioned the same key before, so I think for girls at least that's a good key to try), so maybe just try pitch changing the song with Audacity or something. Other things to consider are around the 0:22 mark, play around with the notes so that you can sing the rest of it at the same octave as the beginning part. Also, skip those random unnecessarily high notes that don't add syllables (00:29~ and 00:44~).

Funny thing is, when I wrote the song I kind of "imagined" in my head that those parts would be sung an octave lower, I just wrote it out instrumentally that high so that the melody would be more clear among the backgrounds. It definitely doesn't sound good vocally in that range either. I mean, I can pull off that range with falsetto, but it's still annoying to hear. >_>

It does make sense to sing it lower, since once you hit the chorus, even if you sing those high notes perfectly, it wouldn't sound good for the song. I still think G major is a good key....xD Since you can start singing on D3, and as you sing up the scale, the notes aren't terribly difficult to hit.
True that to the high notes, althogh I'm rather fond of the one at 0:29....I think an okay one to skip is the one right before the chorus. =3=
