Eyecatches

Post by Kazaazz on Sat Oct 30, 2010 10:29 am

During my time on this forum I've noticed a few suggestions/mentions of eyecatches here and there but as of yet, I don't think I've seen an official suggestion topic for it. (I checked and everything!) I think I actually remember something about this in the general/social thread (I think anyway) but no one really considered it seriously I guess.

Either way, I fly in to suggest it! Pretty much every anime today has an eyecatch, although I think they're more popularly used in children's animes. Such as the current Pokemon anime (really extravagant), Yu-Gi-Oh (couldn't find a better quality link, sorry), and I remember FMA: Brotherhood used them too (the kind I'm thinking we should have).
Just in case you don't know what I mean by eyecatch, they're basically a still picture that flashes across the screen for a second or two at the halfway point of an episode, signalling the beginning and end of the commercial break. (So there's two in all in an episode) Usually they consist of the main character(s) in some sort of pose, doing something IC with a sound effect sometimes added on. Nothing dramatic. Sometimes there is some minor animation in it, but in most I've seen there's nil. The current Pokemon anime is an exception. I've never seen any other anime do so much animation for an eyecatch.

So I just thought that if we're gonna be professional and stuff, eyecatches should at least be considered. They're good checkpoints in an episode, helpful for signalling a dramatic plot point. Even IF their 'official' use is just to let you know the break is beginning/over so everyone can get away from the TV for a few minutes. But since we're not going for TV (obviously...*shudders*) that point is useless. And of course some people think they break up the action a bit and would just be better if they did a fade-out to black sort of thing, but I thought that was a little boring. They don't require much work at all, being a simple picture. Of course they have to change occasionally, perhaps according to the arc, or even volume.

But ANYWAY, that's the idea itself out the way and I'll provide suggestions now on the possible poses etc now to save everyone coming up with them.

This is something from one of videofan's photobucket albums and something which could be used for an eyecatch. Simple, to the point and a possible candidate. Just thought I'd share it. Check out his three albums though, they have good reference material. They really are awesome ^w^.

My main ideas though are actually have the volume covers as eyecatches (it's just about as copyrighted as everything else we're doing...almost) and having them change accordingly. So when Blue appears in Chapter 10/Episode whatever, we change the eyecatch to volume 2's cover. Oh by the way, worrying about the little stuff like "What if she appears in the middle of an episode?" or "What if one eyecatch gets more episodes than another?" right now won't help as it's ages away, so don't bother mentioning that kind of stuff. Before going into the details we should first accept it, no? After all our motto is 'Let's cross that hurdle when we come to it!'
And all those who don't know/forgotten the volume covers, all are listed here. The first 3 are what I'm eyeing, seeing as we're in the R/G/B Arc.
Of course, instead of changing the volume covers accordingly, we could switch between the main protagonists according to volume. (And there are spoiler issues as well)

Like this image really then, split accordingly and going Red, Green then Blue. Like the games. And these are all volume cover pictures too, (Green and Blue are on the back). It'll keep fans happy.

However, my other idea (and personally my favourite), is to have this as an eyecatch all the way through the R/G/B arc. The pic itself appeared at the end of volume 3:

Sure there are spoilers I guess...but it was based off the pic below.

If we wanna work, we could change the Pokemon as they evolve, but I prefer the idea of just one throughout. Less work, less trouble. But mainly I considered this image foremost in my thoughts because it shows how Pokespe sometimes uses ideas that weren't used in the final version of the game. One such example being the unnamed, unused female character that Blue was based off.

Anyways, sorry for long post...but just putting the eyecatch idea forward...professionally. (I hope

It's true, most anime aimed at adults don't have eyecatches, they just show the title in the bottom-right corner and fade out/fade in.

If we were to have eyecatches, then the first thing to be determined is, would they all conform to the same style, or should it change for each phase/arc of the story line?

I don't think doing spin offs of other animes is what they want to do lmao.

(Although TTGL is my favorite anime, Squirtle just looks a little creepy when he looks like Kamina)

Having just had to look up TTGL, I will watch that. Seems good.

Anyways, yeah we're not doing a spin off of the current anime lord no...we're doing an anime of thePokemon Special manga since with the current Pokemon anime out and going from bad to worse, no ones gonna step up and make another anime of Pokemon even if it's got a MUCH better plot and MUCH better characters because it'll just be compared with it and constantly overshadowed. (I thought everyone on this site knew that...)

Also, Hamster, there's obviously gonna be a degree on consistency, basing it on Mato's style. This is a serious fanime, not a parody after all.

I like the anime for pokemon already..it's just like Ash fukkerita said: It's been 13 years already. It's just pokemon is getting a little tiresome with "Get 8 badges, take part in the league*ash always loses* goes to new region(repeat)" I want to help make the anime because I love Pokemon Special and would like to see it more than just a manga.

WHAT!?
Haven't I made the existence of this series abundantly clear already!?
For crying out loud Kaz. confused

And for everyone's information, I was posting that for fun, not as a suggestion.

This fanime is not going to have enough guts, guns and boobs for that to work. lol

For some reason you sound random, but yeah his avatar is TTGL (The only anime with robot's bigger than the moon) That's a fight scene between Viral and Simon.

Anyway, eyecatches. I think it's a good idea, but didn't they say that they didn't want to draw too much attention?

This is not true actually. There are plenty of anime with mecha larger than the moon.

However, Gurren Lagann does have the largest mecha in anime history.

But yeah, sorry to stray so far from topic. I feel bad now.

It does, but I like the storyline for it. And I think the mecha is as large as the moon. Because the moon was suppose to be a mecha on it's own. Sorry for the spoilers.

Okay let's stop getting off topic xD

...Simon? The kid? Huh. (Great, I've been spoiled). *currently in the middle of the 1st episode*
SORRY FOR NOT WATCHING IT YET THEN. I SHALL DO SO NOW.
And just realized, Yuri Lowenthal does Simon's dub voice! *fangirl squeal*

BACK ON TOPIC, another thing I remembered about eyecatches is generally how even if it's a picture, it's usually a picture that's having a lot going on in it. Eye candy as it were. It just gives you something to gawk at for a second before the action restarts.

Re: Eyecatches

Post by Nol on Sat Oct 30, 2010 2:04 pm

Yeah, there was some discussion on eyecatches before, and coincidentally, I suggested basing them off of the volume covers too.

Eyecatches are a good idea because while there aren't commercial breaks, the episodes will be split on YouTube, so making an intentional break/transition into an eyecatch will help the episode flow for the viewers.

I've never seen any other anime do so much animation for an eyecatch.

Off the top of my head, Digimon and Dragonball Z had some pretty animated eyecatches.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVJh9_doxjg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTp0FL4jXYE

On that note, my preferred eyecatch style would be something like what Dragonball Kai does:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kW8jUlJNVU

Basically, they recycle the animated parts with Goku's attacks, but the final pictures are different for each episode, highlighting the important characters for the episode. This is cool because even minor characters that only show up for a few episodes get a bit of the spotlight.

I was thinking something like Kai's style could be used, like a recycled clip of Red throwing his pokeball towards the screen is used throughout the series, but when the ball opens, a new picture is shown each episode, portraying a main character introduced with the episode's key pokemon (ex. Lt. Surge's St. Anne episode could show him off with Electabuzz, or the first episode could show Red with Poli and a transparent picture of Mew in the background, etc.).

...I thought that was more of an idea for the ending really. 3D Pokedexes are gonna be hard to animate you know. It's only an eyecatch; we need something simple.

And Hamster...no, j-just...no. (i.e shut up and quit spoiling me! And try to calm down, geez.)

But, Nol, thank you for the first serious response! The DBK one is definitely interesting...but you never know, there may not be something to recycle...hard to say to be honest. Kinda need someone like Aki here to say something about realistically achievable stuff but she's on hiatus...And as for different pictures an episode, to me it sounds a bit like a lot of work to be honest. Joy could atest whether it's possible for us to do one every episode, but I myself am not against the idea. It would be awesome if we could, but yeah...limits and stuff. *facedesk*

*ahemtrytostayontopichamster!

Anyways...yes, you're right kaz. We've had eyecatch suggestions, but not really a specific thread, so...this could work!

I still think the 3D pokeball idea is going to be a strong candidate for the eyecatch...well, for anyone who wasn't here/doesn't remember, here it is!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx85I54uYd0

(made by our one and only, aki!)
Although, you're right when you say pictures could be used as eyecatches (which would be easier then the animations)...but I seem to remember having that discussion a long time ago...(having a forum veteran moment) It was something like...(having the pictures coloured and outlined would talke a long time, but someone else said it would be faster then animating...and I think that discussion left unsolved) So, I guess we could make the decision right now!

Wait...I remember another eyecatch suggestion from a while back. It was that we would use the pokedex entry of the pokemon of the day chapter, and have it's coloured sprite along with its original pokedex information (from Red and Blue)

So, I think anyone of these ideas could work! (its just the decision on choosing which one!) Great thread idea, kaz!

On a more responsible (gasp) note, try to stay on topic. 'Specially you three troublemakers/spammers.

The pokédex entry idea is okay, but there is a tendency to show pokedex info during the chapter, so I'm not so for it.
Actualy, we could show certain main characters and their badges, etc. Taking inspiration from DP, there's that thign they show at the end of most chapters where you see the three protagonists and their pokemon and Platina's badges.

If we could work something similar to that for RGB as well, I think that *could* work well.

E-Eh you're no referring to me as well are you? Even if I put something off-topic on a post, I always put something on topic too! Don't lump me with those two, specially Hamster...only for his love for Elfen Lied and such though...! *mumbles*

BACK on topic AGAIN, I'm glad most people don't see to mind the idea, and, erm, no problem tweetums! Just floating around the forum and noticing this stuff I guess. But yeah, whatever you described there definitely seemed to be faster than animating. We could have our logo somewhere on the picture I guess, and if no one minds, we could have it flash a bit..or something.
As for the badges stuff, that's at the end of the volume though isn't it...I mean it's the end of the first 3 volumes, cateloguing Red's progress, but it'll be kinda hard to update though wouldn't it?

Wait who? I was trying to get back on topic -.-"

The badges I don't think will work since Red doesn't really earn the ones from the Lt. Surge, Sabrina, Blaine, Giovanni, and Koga. I kinda prefer the 3D pokedex since that's basically a symbol of the three trainers, then falling into the different regions update it to their pokedex versions.

Well finally a place to discuss this. XD

personally I prefer character pictures. With the characters saying their names. (actually I suggested this before)

And yeah aki made the 3D pokedex. While I like the pokedex, to me having a pokedex showing info and stuff is not really that interesting. ^^; And we have to find info and stuff, that will require extra work right? and it's just for a few seconds of eyecatch. >.>

Well maybe not showing info, but it could just open and spin then close as it comes back around. I don't know if I'd like have silence the n all the sudden RED or BLUE or GREEN in my ear. o.x

Yeah, but there's plenty of animes that have their names and don't say it, like Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. I think it will be a little bit odd..to put silence and then someone saying their name out of nowhere.

There's also been eye catches that have music rather than pictures that move, I know TTGL does that but there is a little movement with a light. I also know an anime called Angel Beats that does just one note on a piano and no picture just their title. Here I'll upload it: (I'm not doing TTGL since it's kinda overused now in this topic)

Angel Beats - Eyecatch

Actually having 2 different pictures per episode for the eye catches won't be too hard at all, its just that you guys will have to exert more time on it. For simplicity I think having one picture like this and then the logo "pokespecial" moving on the screen will work just fine. Or the picture could be blurred then it starts to clear up and the "pokespecial" comes on too. My suggestion is that you guys shouldn't squeeze too much in trying to make everything perfect like a moving eye catch like dragon ball etc. Otherwise there won't be anything done.
