Here the poll result

Pokedex: first gen display

Sprites: 1st gen sprites redrawn (pixelated)
There was a tie between 1st gen sprites redrawn (pixelated) and updated 1st gen sprites. But thinks we'er better out using redrawn (pixelated) 1st gen sprites.

Sound: trainers read the pokedex and verbalize it indirectly

This is something that been bugging for a while now. But it's something that haven been talk about on this project yet. (as I know of) So I feel like this needs to be discuss.

Edit: The manga takes some thing from the anime. The first Pokédex design is from the anime. Even those the anime takes nothing for the manga.

I know we going to have to use the information from the Generation 1 Pokédex. That what they used in this manga.

I divide this up into differents categories.

Pokémon Sprites:
We all know the pokédex show the pokémon in Sprite form or just a pokémon picture. However should we do something differents or keep it the same.

1. Generation 1 Sprites
2. Updated Generation 1 Sprites Example
3. Hand drawn Sprites
4. Hand drawn pokémon in a Generation 1 pose
5. Realistic pokémon
6. Realistic pokémon in a Generation 1 pose

(We trying to the pokémon sound more realistic anyways.)


Talking:
We don't know in the manga if the pokédex talks or not. I thinks we should have the pokédex talk. It from the anime but it's a good idea. It's faster if we have someone speeching for the pokédex. They do it in Star Trek too and other shows.

1. Voice actors for the pokédex
2. Or when each characters is reading the pokédex information we can have them saying it out loud.
3. Have the same person who's playing Professor Oak do the voice for the pokédex. (make sense. Sense Professor Oak made the Pokédex)

im just guessing, but i think the pokedex anime's voice is an altered version of oak's voice. Like, vocaloid oak?8D But they probably just voice record as per usual and alter the voice to sound robotic, lol.

hm.. maybe no talking. :/ in the manga it doesnt talk, so no talking. i dont want drastic changes like that..

and as for the display and sprites.. i'm not sure.. gen 1 sprites are not really pretty xD but the manga use it so.. >.>

Generation 1 display.
Hand drawn pokémon in a Generation 1 pose.
No Pokedex voice. Trainers might read the information aloud.


What I'd want is to start off using the poses from the original Pokemon Red and Green sprites, and then once Blue shows up in the story, base the poses off Pokemon Blue.

And then continue with Yellow version sprites for Yellow's Chapter, Gold and Silver will have their own version sprites reflected in their Pokedex, Crystal shows them that the Pokedex can have an animated feature, etc.

It isn't that drastic. In the manga we don't know if the pokédex talks or not. That I said "2. Or when each characters is reading the pokédex information we can have them saying it out loud." The main reason why I want the pokédex talks is becasued of my autism

It's a lot faster and easyer even if we the characters reading there pokédex out loud.

The sprites I say we sure have then in the same poses as in Generation 1 game or have them the or sprites but in Color. That what I mean by Updated Generation 1 Sprites

I did not make these. This is what I mean by Updated Generation 1 Sprites.

I would've imagined the generation 1 Pokedex would have the sprites from the original Red and Green or the sprites from US Red and Blue. If I recall, the only time we see "Yellow" sprites are on a computer or something similar since Yellow didn't have a Pokedex during the Yellow Chapter.
Maybe the sprites change depending on the Region of the Pokedex?

Also perhaps the image should be a hand-drawn version of the sprites based on the game the Pokedex is from.

As for speech, I think that's up in the air. The Pokedex is capable of emitting sound based on how it stores the cries of Pokemon however since all speech in the game is text-based we don't know if the Dex itself can speak or not. The original anime used speech because the producers thought the audience would tire of having to read the entries over and over.

I'm pretty sure that the card game released the "Pokedex" card before the anime had one episode done, and the card game has the exact same design only it's drawn in 3D.

I believe first and then the card. Ether way the manga use this Pokedex. The manga did take stuff form the anime more then ones. We have to use this pokedex design because that what they used in the manga.

Pika is base on Ash's pikachu
I know there some other thing but I can't think of them rigth now.

The reason I think the card game had the design first is because the card was released in the Base Set (first set released by the card game), and the Base Set was released in 1996 (I think like October). The anime's first episode aired on April 1997, and the card game released the Jungle Set (second set) in March 1997, so I think that the Base Set cards were all released before the anime started airing.

EDIT: Not trying to argue or anything, by the way. I just think that the design for the first generation pokedex design was established like that, so both the anime and manga ran with that.

I never play the card game. I can't fine released date for the first pokedex cards. In October 1996 the anime was being made and DESIGN. However they could have been design by the same parson. But still going to have to used this pokedex because that was used in this manga.

Yeah, this is the official design and I'm sure that's the design we're going to use. I was just pointing out that the design might not have been completely from the anime. Which is kinda pointless and off-topic. Neutral

Anyways, I stick by with re-drawing them in the same poses as the sprites. Because some of the old sprite designs are pretty different than how the pokemon look now. An example would be Dratini, because it has a smooth under-belly now, but Blue version's sprite makes it similar to Dragonite's underbelly. Not to mention some of the sprites just look plain ugly *cough*Golbat*cough*.

I think using the gen 1 display is good. As for the sprites, I think we should use the first gen sprites poses, but we redraw them in a pixelated way so that they still look digital-ish. I personally don't like how the anime drew the pokemon in those anime line quality despite the pokedex being a device in the pokemon world (okay I'm making people confused). I mean if we redraw the first gen sprites we would ensure that they are all in higher quality anyway~

And I would prefer a talking pokedex, for several reasons. If the pokedex only shows words, there would suddenly be an awkward pause in the show, where the words are shown and the ost being played (like in the games), but that would disrupt the story flow. Asking to let the trainer read isn't that bad of a thing, but-- *imagine very serious fight scenes and red suddenly starts to read the pokedex aloud.* I mean, I can imagine red reading it aloud in situations like when he's "wondering" what the pokemon is, but during battles? Wouldn't it be weird to suddenly read aloud and all? Whilst for the case of pokedex talking, we don't really have to show the words, just have the pokedex read them out. And at the same time the screen play can be focused on red's foes, the angles can still change despite the pokedex talking, it doesn't have to focus on 1 point. The camera could be focused on the foe, on red's expres​sion(him being wary of his opponent, for example. Imagine red checking out surge's electabuzz using the pokedex, and suddenly he reads aloud, won't that ruin the atmosphere, the build up? Would red even be in the mood to read aloud when his about to get killed by some supposed gym leader gone wrong? I think not, it'll be more like his listening to the pokedex talk while his attention focuses on being wary of his enemies surrounding him.)

woo long comment is long, but that's just my opinion on this.

That's some good justification. The way I was thinking, the trainers wouldn't actually read loud the description out loud, just glance at it and then restate some main points.

We'd probably have to do some re-writing for some scenes, because the official data doesn't always fit the scenes that the pokedex is used. Like in your Electabuzz example, it's a really tense scene, but the Pokedex entry just mentions how it can eat electricity.

I agree with Aki is saying that it would be best to do all the sprites slightly pixeled to make them more realistic and to have them as first gen sprites, but as for whether or not the pokedex talks... I think it might be good if we have the trainers read it out when the pokedex entry is mentioned in the storyline, because we don't really need to have them metioned otherwise. 'is shot'
And during the times when the pokedex is needed but we don't won't the dexholder in question to talk we could use 'thought-speach' like they have in some anime. These are only sugestions though, and I'm not sure if they'd be any good. Any thoughts?

So most of us are saying that we should have the gen 1 display,redrawn pokémon sprites in a Gen 1 pose and maybe have the pokedex talk and shows words.
Aki11 said it a talking pokedex is a good idea for for several reasons. And there no there nothing saying the pokedex talk didsn't talk in the manga.

We need more people to comment on this before we do a poll.

well, if it's just brief indications of red describing the pokemon, saying the main points, that sounds okay. But I can't help but feel that the focus on pokemon is lost in that process, i mean, the pokedex isn't really supposed to read moods, ya know~ It won't know that "oh hey there's a electabuzz nearby, so I shall reveal less information cos it's dangerous" It would still spill out the information like what it is programmed to do regardless of the situation. And if it's the case of thought, or just stating the main points, lots of other information on pokemon will be lost. (okay I think I got my points jumbled up but whatever>>;;; )

I like the "thought-speech" idea. So it'd be like.

Red (questioning/surprised): What is this?
*opens pokedex and reads description*
Red (thinking over action): So it can eat electricity eh? Well then...(ordering out loud) Pika! Go!

Just an example, but I think it'd work better than having to drastically change the pokedex or have the trainers waste time reading out loud. And really, how many times is what the pokedex says truly significant? And what is significant is usually reiterated by the trainers anyway, through thought or speech. Anyone who reads the manga usually figures out which pokemon is which and what it does anyway.

As for the sprites, IDK XD that's not my department, lulz.

Well I am all for the Gen I sprites but having them colored. I would like to see the entries look just like or at least remarkably similar to how they look in the Gen I games.

For the pokedex talking, I am completely against it. But maybe perhaps when someone opens the dex and looks at it, and the entry applies to the scene, then there can be a quick moment when the audience can see it. Like RM said, perhaps they could then say outloud or think [voice over] only the important facts. I feel like, while the other anime likes to have the dex talk all day about every single poke that comes around, in this medium, the dex doesn't serve that purpose.

Hopefully that made sense. Having a brain fart over here and can't really explain things coherently apparently. [heehee I'm a poet]

well. you guys do have a point and it seems that the majority thinks the same. It's probably thought that then, I guess. Since the show doesn't need to franchise pokemon itself so much as much as nintendo, it's more of the trainers in pokespecial that gets the limelight. well self contradiction againXD I'm being convinced so much lately, lolXD

Now I think we got a good idea how to do about the pokedex speech. The trainers thinking what the pokedex is saying. Works for me! As long as people don't need to read when they are watching this show.

As for the sprites. We should have them in the Gen 1 pose.

I'm not saying we should take out the text or graphics altogether. We should still put something down for those fans that wish to pause it and read X3 (I do this all the time when words are shown but aren't really meant to be read. In fact, I paused the opening to Doogie Howser, M.D. earlier today and tried to read the news articles.) Lulz.

But reading it all in most cases would be pointless.

And I get what you're saying Aki. I remember it used to annoy me that the "Who's that pokemon?" in the anime commercial cut was always really easy, cause you knew it was just the new pokemon introduced in that episode. XD I was a weird kid. ^^;

But I think you get what I mean right? The anime was always about pushing the "pokemon of the day" and not necessarily about the story and the trainer. That's why the manga is so great, because story's not built around the fact that there's pokemon, but more the fact that there are pokemon aids the story.

Now I'm not making sense, lulz. >.>;

I will alway like the anime out of nostalgia. This manga is so must better and to bad not a lot of people besaid the fans know about it. Most of my 150 subscirbers only hard about it form me.

Ironically it was the manga that renewed my interest in the series. The anime has pretty much hit rock bottom and the games are starting to become stale with each new generation (but that's not stopping me from getting HeartGold).
